Why did the CFC-Board of Governors decide to have two divisions for the Certified Financial Coach?
There are two Certified Financial Coach divisions:
CFC-ITM
CFC-I is a Certified Financial Coach who has training and expertise as a Certified Financial Coach but has decided that they do not wish to expand their coaching to include direct work with client assets. If a client works with a CFC-I, when it comes to the direct work of advisory recommendations around financial decision-making, this Certified Financial Coach professional refers his/her client to investment professionals who work specifically on the asset side.
CFC-RTM
CFC-R is a Certified Financial Coach with the same training and expertise as a CFC-I, however in addition, they are qualified to work in the financial arena as an advisor (CFC-R). The R stands for RIA Division. If the financial professional is not an RIA they may qualify for the professional status in one of many financial areas (CFC-PRO) in which they are licensed. These Certified Financial Coach professionals have additional training and must meet specific requirements that qualify them for either of these designations.
There are two Divisions because there is such a great need for people to do this work and not all financial professionals have the emotional makeup, time or interest to become a Certified Financial Coach. Certified Financial Coaches with the CFC-I designation have been trained to work in the Eleven Areas of Wealth and Human Strength and develop a sophistication in understanding the financial industry. They provide the educational skills and coaching insights necessary to help individuals develop a new appreciation of being around wealth and money. The Certified Financial Coach's role is to help individuals become empowered. From this empowerment, individuals are more effective in working with financial professionals.
Today there is great anxiety around money. People trained as professional coaches (who meet certain standards of training) have learned skills to help people disengage from their emotional baggage and become aware to what is real. The CFC-Board of Governors decided that the joining of two professional skill sets – the ability to coach and the ability to implement plans for a successful financial future for clients – were a perfect combination. This coupling of skill sets is accomplished in two ways:
Professionally trained coaches become partners with experienced, ethical financial professionals to provide the services needed.
The Financial professional is trained as a professional coach.
The Board decided the criteria of skills and programs for the Certified Financial Coach licensing program.
